Northampton has been recognised as being among the best places for supporting entrepreneurs and innovators in the UK. More small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are being set up in the town than almost anywhere else in the country.

A government think-tank placed Northampton as being one of the top ten places in the UK for SMEs and also one of the top ten places where SMEs are successfully adopting high-growth strategies.

It comes as the Centre for Cities has published its ‘Small Business Outlook 2014’ looking at the strength and performance of SMEs.

Northampton Borough Council leader David Mackintosh said: “SMEs are the lifeblood of our economy, they represent the entrepreneurs and innovators who have the drive and energy to create a business and make it a success.

“With an enterprise zone and a positive attitude to supporting business we are finding that Northampton is attracting people who want to invest and create jobs.”

NEP chief executive Jo Lappin added: “This is excellent news for Northampton, as it recognises the quality business offer that is available to those that want to start or grow their business here. We have the people, the location, the sites and premises and the can-do attitude that means that we really are the best place to do business.”
